Finding Strength and Joy: A Parent’s Journey with an Autistic Adult Child

At The Buddy Center, we believe every story matters—and Debbie’s journey with her daughter offers a powerful reminder of the resilience, growth, and joy that can come with raising a child on the autism spectrum.

Debbie’s daughter, now 31, was not officially diagnosed with autism until college. Like many girls, her early signs were overlooked. Despite this, Debbie and her husband learned to advocate fiercely for her needs, from simple adjustments in school (like rethinking rigid binder color codes) to ensuring she had safe spaces to retreat and recharge at home.

The challenges were real—middle school brought struggles with fitting in, and social interactions weren’t always easy—but with support and advocacy, her daughter thrived. She went on to earn two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree, traveled internationally, and today enjoys a fulfilling career as an archaeologist. She is proud, self-advocating, and open about being both autistic and gay, embracing her identity with confidence.

Debbie credits one piece of advice as life-changing: “Stop trying to pull her into your world. You’ve got to go into hers and find out what works for her.” That shift in perspective allowed her daughter not just to cope, but to flourish.

Her story also highlights a critical truth—autism is not one-size-fits-all. Every autistic person’s needs, strengths, and challenges are unique. What helped Debbie’s daughter succeed may not be what another child needs. Individualized approaches, supportive communities, and a willingness to learn alongside your child make all the difference.

Most importantly, Debbie wants parents to know that a diagnosis is not the end of dreams. “Our daughter has been a blessing every single day of her life,” she shared. “She’s proof that autistic individuals can live full, joyful, independent lives.”

At The Buddy Center, we aim to create that kind of future for every family we serve—by empowering children, supporting caregivers, and celebrating each person’s unique strengths.
