Frequently Asked Questions
ABA means Applied Behavior Analysis. ABA practitioners focus on changing the client's surroundings (or environment) to help individuals be as safe, independent, and happy as possible. ABA is used to teach new skills and to replace dangerous or ineffective behaviors with ones that are more suited to helping people communicate. Practitioners do this by finding why the behavior is occurring or not occurring and addressing what is important to each individual person and family.
ABA is known as a mainstream treatment for autism spectrum disorder. Note that “treatment” refers to addressing behaviors associated with the diagnosis, not the diagnosis itself. There is no “cure” for Autism, nor should there be. We have learned by listening to autistic adults that many of them embrace who they are and celebrate the unique individuality they have. The Buddy Center celebrates individuality and helps other people with neurodivergent brains to not just survive, but thrive in a world that struggles to understand differences.
ABA is not just for individuals with autism. The science of behavior that guides ABA is effective for everyone—including our practitioners and you reading this right now. ABA practices range from breaking down skills and teaching them step by step to self-management and social skills. ABA is used within organizations to drive culture and employee retention (called organizational behavior management), within residential facilities with older individuals (called behavioral gerontology), and even within sports and fitness. Most insurance companies will only cover individuals who have autism. However, if you are interested in services but your child does not have a diagnosis of autism, we still may be able to help.
